Since the Oscars are finally happening today (seems like we waited for years right???) I thought it was appropriate to talk about them and things related like the Oscar Contenders goody bag. I will post the contents of the goody bag here but you can click on that link for more commentary.
This year’s goody bags include a $12,000 trip to Australia, condoms, a $600 acupuncture appointment and a package of 10 personal training sessions valued at $850. Circus lessons for the nominee’s children worth $400 are also included, as well as a $5,000 face-lift procedure, a $1,800 one-year membership to Heathrow Airport’s private VIP service, a $3,000 stay at the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort in Mexico, and Windex.
When I read this I laughed then I laughed again. Why did I laugh? Because it is all so hilariously sad. If you are nominee you get the bag when you lose.
So why do I find this so sad? Not only are these “gifts” ostentatious and generally just a blatant display of immense wealth (which I can go on and on about but I will not) we have the face-lift procedure. The goody bags include a face lift, oscar nominees get a face lift!
If I name this year’s nominees off the top of my head for best actress and best supporting actress; we have Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Jessica Chastain, Quvenzhané Wallis, Naomi Watts, Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Sally Field, Helen Hunt etc I probably missed someone. First we have JLaw a young 22-year-old woman who is beautiful. Secondly, Riva an 86-year-old woman (she turned 86 today!! So she will be at the Oscars on her birthday!). Wallis is a 9-year-old girl. I can go on and on about each of the nominees mentioned but the point is they are all beautiful attractive women in their own right. Why the hell would Riva need a face lift or Wallis? At least Wallis also gets circus lessons!
We also have the personal training sessions. What I’m getting at here is women and body image. The face lifts, can you really imagine any of the male nominees using that? They will give it to their wives, their female friends or maybe even their sisters. What does this say about the Academy? As a woman even though you are a nominee and supposedly the best at your craft, you are still not good enough. You still need that face lift and those personal training sessions because your body is not perfect. We do not care about what they have achieved, their body is what matters.
This is what our society tells women today.
As women, we will never be more than our bodies.
